For a long time, having a good website was effectively the finish line of a business's digital presence — a polished, well-maintained site was the clear signal of a business taking its online presence seriously. That's still true, but it's no longer the whole picture, because a meaningful and fast-growing share of customer interaction is shifting toward AI-mediated experiences layered on top of, or alongside, the website itself.
This shows up in several concrete ways already. Customers increasingly expect an instant answer to a specific question rather than having to browse and read to find it themselves — which is exactly the gap an AI chatbot or assistant fills. Internally, teams are starting to expect the same thing from their own tools: instant, specific answers pulled from company knowledge rather than searching through folders and documents by hand.
The businesses treating this well aren't necessarily building the most sophisticated AI systems — they're the ones recognising that an AI layer, even a modest one, has become a normal, expected part of a complete digital presence, in the same way a mobile-friendly design became an unquestioned baseline a decade ago rather than a differentiator.
This doesn't mean every business needs a complex AI infrastructure overnight. It means thinking about a website and an AI layer as connected parts of the same system, rather than the website as the whole of a business's digital presence with AI treated as a separate, optional add-on considered only once everything else is finished.
For most businesses, the realistic starting point isn't a large AI initiative — it's identifying the single question customers or staff ask most often that currently requires digging through a page or a document, and building a small, focused tool to answer just that one thing well. Businesses that start small here, with one clearly defined use case done well, tend to build the internal confidence and know-how to expand thoughtfully from there, rather than attempting too much at once and losing momentum.
